Lustron Home and Garage
The Whitehall Historical Society is constructing a
Lustron Home and Garage in the south end of Whitehall Community Park
near Poth Road. A Lustron
Home is an all-steel house known for its porcelain-enamel exterior, and was
built by the Lustron Corporation from 1947-50.
The company occupied the former Curtiss-Wright Aircraft building at 4200 E.
5th Ave. Some 3,000 parts comprised each of the 2,500 homes, and roughly
2,000 have escaped demolition. The house was donated by a London, Ohio
couple, roof panels were donated by the City of Fontana, Wisconsin.
the society raised $15,000 through donations to
help with the construction of the home. The garage was donated by the owners
of a Gould Rd. Lustron in Columbus. Completion
of the project will occur sometime in 2007. If you have questions about the
home you can go to the society's web-site at whitehallhistsoc@aol.com or
call society member Dick Janusz at 868-1464.
